Real Games, Real Learning

Filament Games has this rare constellation of artists, game designers, project leaders, user-interface designers, and programmers/engineers that combines with a sense of playfulness, curiosity, and wonder.

MARGARET CHMIEL, FORMER DIRECTOR OF CURRICULUM & COMMUNICATIONS – SMITHSONIAN INSTITUTION

Founded in 2005, Filament Games is a full-service digital studio that focuses exclusively on learning games. We’ve completed over 160 projects since our founding and have worked with some of the biggest names in education – folks like Amazon, Scholastic, Smithsonian, National Geographic, Television Ontario (TVO), McGraw-Hill, and even the US Department of Education.

Our prime directive is to create inspiring educational experiences that spark imagination and foster deep learning through exploration and discovery. We specialize in finding the best ways to expose players to active, appropriately difficult, and interesting problems that engage their natural curiosity and desire to be challenged. Check out some of our best and brightest projects below:

Breaking Boundaries in Science

Made in partnership with Oculus and the Jane Goodall Institute, Breaking Boundaries in Science is a free-to-play VR celebration of famed women scientists Marie Curie, Grace Hopper, and Jane Goodall, featuring voiceover by Jane Goodall herself.

iCivics.org

Founded by Supreme Court Justice Sandra Day O’Connor, iCivics.org is a nationally-recognized collection of free-to-play civics learning games with more than 7 million student users and more than 82 million lifetime plays.

RoboCo

In our upcoming game RoboCo, players build and control robots to serve squishy, hapless humans in the world of tomorrow, and possibly cause some light property damage.

Beats Empire

Made in partnership with Columbia University, Beats Empire is a turn-based computational thinking game where the player runs a small music studio and record label in a fictional city, reminiscent of New York. The player analyzes market data about the musical preferences of the citizens in the boroughs of the city, using data analysis and visualization to bring cash into the studio, attract new followers, and dominate the charts.

Scholastic W.O.R.D.

Developed by Filament Games, Scholastic W.O.R.D. is a reading and vocabulary program for early learners in K-5. Through games and written passages, students independently progress within a game-based, guided program in which they receive repeated exposure to high-utility words and their meanings in multiple contexts.
