Welcome back to the Game-based Learning Review! This week we kick things off with two new homegrown widgets. First, we test our trivia skills in Filament Fours, our education- and game-themed word-grouping puzzle, and reminisce about classic Windows titles like Space Cadet Pinball and Minesweeper. Next, we try out a random game-pitch generator, which leads to a conversation about older adults playing Minecraft and a pitch for a 4X strategy game built around inheritance and estate planning.
Then we head back into the virtual labs of RoboCo! Dan takes another run at the notorious goo gap level, upgrading his robot with a telescoping piston and a counterweighted arm driven by custom controls for both wiggling and waggling. It's an episode packed with game design ideas and elegant engineering.
Episode Outline:
- [0:00-10:29] We debut Filament Fours, our game-based learning puzzle. We group classic Windows games, kid-friendly coding apps, and playground activities while sidestepping a few red herrings.
- [10:30-27:43] Our new random pitch generator challenges Dan to pitch a 4X game about compound probability for retirees. The prompt opens a discussion of how older adults are represented in games and leads to a pitch for an inheritance management simulator.
- [27:44-38:00] We jump back into RoboCo to tackle the goo gap. Dan refines his existing robot with a large telescoping piston and custom speed controls that give the extending mechanism a satisfying snap.
- [38:01-55:45] To turn a stubborn red valve, Dan engineers a new mechanical arm. He experiments with wiggle and waggle motors, adds a counterweight, and lines up his bot to conquer the level next week.
