Welcome back to the Game Based Learning Review! This week we dive back into RoboCo to tackle the tricky, multi-phased "Byte of the Living Dead" level. Dan's engineering skills get put to the test as he builds a zombie-thwarting rescue robot equipped with telescoping pistons, oscillating saws, and eventually, a highly effective stabbing sword.

Between battling bandwidth-crashing piston limits and rescuing trapped humans from a dilapidated furniture store, we also get into a theory of game design we have been kicking around. We debate whether our favorite games function as glorified email, as digital toys, or as meticulous homework, and tie the whole thing back to classic game-based learning theory and intrinsic motivation. Grab your coffee, avoid the roaming zombie manager, and let's get building.

Episode Outline:

  • [0:00 - 10:12] We kick off the stream with audio checks before jumping into the game. We resummoned the robot-of-too-many-pistons, which sabotaged the stream, so we quickly optimized the build to create a less parts-intensive flush barrier that traps the initial zombie wave.
  • [10:13 - 17:50] A weekend spent setting up a new game server sparks a deep-dive conversation on game design theory. We work through whether games function as email, as toys, or as homework, and reference James Paul Gee's theories on how games drive deep literacy and learning.
  • [17:51 - 32:50] Back to the robotics challenge. Dan iterates on his vehicle by attaching an oscillating saw to chew through a boarded-up door, and we talk about the importance of good documentation and naming conventions when building complex machines.
  • [32:51 - 44:00] Navigating the back alleys of the furniture store turns up a handful of great Easter eggs and secret objectives, including a depressed Roomba, a fire extinguisher, and a door referencing an infamous zombie television advertisement from yesteryear.
  • [44:01 - 1:03:17] Dan upgrades his robot, swapping the saw for a highly effective stabbing sword to break down barriers. With the clock winding down, he engineers a claw and piston system to grab the "manager" zombie and dump him into containment daycare just in time to wrap up the stream.
