Welcome back to the Game-based Learning Review! This week, Dan and Brandon get back into RoboCo. Having cleared the goo gap last session, Dan takes on a new engineering problem: building a robotic arm precise enough to turn a giant valve and shut off the hazardous sludge. A simple piston-based plan turns into a full redesign when Dan discovers a new mechanical part, becomes consumed by elevator madness, and rebuilds his bot on the fly. The valve stays unturned by the end of the stream, but we'll be back to keep at it soon.

Episode Outline:

  • [0:00 - 4:39] Dan and Brandon open with a nostalgic chat about the Flashpoint Archive, early 2000s Flash games, and some strange old IP mashups.
  • [4:40 - 17:30] Dan jumps back into RoboCo, tweaking his robot's height, weight distribution, and pistons to cross the gap without capsizing into the sludge.
  • [17:31 - 29:50] Dan tries a mix of tines and friction wheels to grip and spin the valve, with some spectacular physics failures along the way.
  • [29:51 - 35:00] Brandon shares some real-world engineering trivia, explaining how the developer's official robot for this level was heavily inspired by an actual NASA hazmat tank.
  • [35:01 - 58:50] Dan finds the elevator mechanism in the parts menu and spends the rest of the stream building a complex, laterally moving contraption.
  • [58:51 - 1:02:18] Dan calls it a day, figuring the new bot needs more offline iteration. We wrap up with some old car talk and plans to play The Logical Journey of the Zoombinis next week.
